In August 2020, the Beirut Port explosion caused more than 200 deaths, 6.000 injuries, left 300.000 people without a home

and caused widespread damage, both within the Port and outside in the city of Beirut.


In detail:

  • Damaged buildings and structures;
  • 49 shipping containers containing range of chemicals and hazardous materials;
  • Hazardous materials, waste and chemicals;
  • Vessels and submerged objects;
  • C&D waste piles;
  • 617 Damaged Vehicles

As a result, the Construction and Demolition (C&D) waste, contains quantities of hazardous wastes as well as, materials and substances containing chemicals and asbestos, which entail both public health and environmental risks.

Through the European Union ongoing Waste Management project, LDK Consultants Technical Assistance (in place since 2018), a team of leading multi-disciplinary disaster waste experts from Lebanon and the rest of the world, was rapidly mobilised after the blasts to ensure:

  • The proper implementation of guidelines for Personnel Protective Equipment (PPE) and the mitigation of health and safety risks
  • The planning of sustainable waste management responses for both the short and longer-term, through the rapid development of a post explosion Construction and Demolition (C&D) Waste Management Plan.
  • To lay the foundation for the integration of the Plan’s waste management activities into medium- and long-term enhancements and improvements for C&D and hazardous waste management in Lebanon.

Overview of the Plan’s Tasks (developed since October 2020 till May 2021)

  • Project Governance: Establishing management, approvals, and work plan
  • Site Clearance: Works required to complete the site clearance carrying on from the ongoing demolition works and supporting the complex demolition and clear-up works of the Silos.
  • Beirut C&D Waste Management: Support to the Ministry of Environment towards identifying appropriate C&D waste management and disposal options.
  • Institutional Strengthening / Legislative Support: Support MoE on C&D waste and hazardous waste management.
